The invitation to deliver the St. Thomas More Memorial lecture at St. Dunstan's Church, Canterbury, England, served as the stimulus for this scholarly piece. Thomas More's fateful conflict between his moralistic beliefs and duty to Henry VIII - a conflict to which I refer as his "dilemma of conscience" - has emblematic relevance for most contemporary lawyers. This article commences with a jurisprudential analysis of More's conflict to demonstrate the virtual inevitability of the conflicts between personally-held beliefs and professional expectations. The author then employs cognitive dissonance theory to explain the discomfort caused by holding contradictory beliefs, and the cognition that naturally follows as the holder attempts to reduce dissonance and resolve the conflict. The article ultimately concludes that legal professionals must think more probatively about the impact that conflicting beliefs have on the decision-making as they attempt to resolve dilemmas of conscience.
