This article examines the trajectory of Irish labour law from 2007 to the present, and considers the future labour law agendas that might be forged in Ireland, ‘post-austerity’. These are explored within the broader context of developments in the European Union relating to worker rights, socio-economic governance, and employment standard-setting. The article argues that, in the spheres of individual and collective labour rights, the trend is towards legislative and policy measures that reduce the influence of trade unions on labour market regulation, reduce the scope for collectively bargained labour standards, downgrade the role of social dialogue, and promote the imposition of labour standards, which seem to operate as a ‘ceiling’ rather than a ‘floor’.
