In this response to Professors Robert Chang and Adrienne Davis's Making Up Is Hard to Do: Race/Gender Sexual Orientation in the Law School Classroom, the author analyzes the issues facing Black female law professors when confronting popularly accepted standards of social identity in the law school environment. Using images that promote notions of conformity – specifically, the act of taming Black hair into straightness – the author illustrates Black female law professors’ multifaceted dilemma. The Author relates her own experiences with “straightening,” noting that personal interests and core values often become inexplicably linked to criterion valued in the professional legal world. In navigating the legal academic complex, Black female law professors may discover that professional credentials and personal relationships become inexplicably bound, converging within one’s social identity and set against a backdrop of straightness that delineates accepted directions for behavior, education, color, and sexuality.
