Centre for Poverty Analysis (CEPA) Summary The economic crisis hit many countries in 2007 and the effects are still being felt in these countries, especially in poorer developing nations. Much of the debate surrounding the economic crisis and its impacts have focused on the financial/economic impacts - import/export impacts, economic growth losses, labour force cutbacks and fiscal imbalances. The social impact, especially on the poor and vulnerable groups has received less mention. Yet if countries are to address the overall impacts of the economic crisis it is vital that they also consider this, investing time and money to deal with them more effectively. There are fears however, that reduction in spending on vital sectors including the health sector to ensure economic recovery could affect poor and vulnerable populations and in turn erase any of the progress that has been made thus far. The decisions to reduce such spending could also come from donors who tend to prioritise a market led recovery process to address the economic crisis thereby neglecting vital sectors that cater to the needs of poor populations, often supplementing government services or meeting resource gaps.
