Wounding the rhizomes with a sterile knife before planting or calcium fertilization during forcing did not increase the disease incidence. The calcium nutrition may have been applied too late in the production cycle, as calcium applied during the field growth phase of potatoes increased the resistance against Erwinia sp. affecting potatoes in storage (Palta, 1996).
