In the commercial development of an innovative process for the production of pathogen-indexed Easter lilies (Lilium longifl orum Thunb.) in less than a year, it became desirable to quan ti fy the cooling pe ri od so that the time of fl ower induction/initiation could be de ter mined. Based upon studies of forcing fl ow er ing plants from bulbs, I hypothesized that cooling could be quan ti fi ed using the cool temperature unit (CTU), defi ned as 1 °C be low 21 °C for 1 hour, and the warm tem per a ture unit (WTU), de fi ned as 1 °C above 21 °C for 1 hour. The purpose of these studies was to determine if the hy poth e sis was valid. With 'Nellie Whiteʼ Easter lily, it was determined that cooling could be quan ti fi ed as hy poth e sized. The min i mum thresh old num ber of CTU that would induce fl ow er ing in at least one plant of the test population after ex po sure to long days was between 1200 and 2400, whereas the thresh old number of CTU that would induce fl ow er ing in 100% of the population was 3600. The optimum thresh old, i.e., the number of CTU that would result in the best market quality, was es ti mat ed to be 4800. The studies demonstrate that market qual i ty, pathogen-in dexed fl ow er ing potted Easter lil ies growing con tin u ous ly from bulblets can be produced in about 1 year, and that the cool ing re quired to sensitize the plants to long days, which is central to the success of the fast production process, is quantifi able.
