A new 6200-m Plant Sciences Building was constructed at the Beltsville Agricultur Research Center (BARC), Beltsville, Md., a will house the Fruit Laboratory and the Ve etable Laboratory of the Plant Sciences In tute and the Floral and Nursery Plants R search Unit of the U.S. National Arboretum will be the home for 29 scientists and supp personnel. The building is located on the ca pus of BARC between existing buildings a greenhouses. The location of the building has inspired style. The front is red brick to blend with th existing buildings around it (cover photo). T back of the building is all glass to pick up t mood of a large expanse of glass on the to the greenhouses. Fortunately, this arran ment allowed the location of the laboratori on the glass side, with ample window space each room. The support rooms (tissue cultu radioisotope, electron microscope, cold room etc.) are across the hallway on the solid br side. The building is built to Occupational Safe and Health Administration specifications th require 10 to 12 air exchanges per hour every laboratory room. Under such standar the building not only was expensive to bu but also is expensive to operate. To decre the cost of operation, the offices were se rated from the laboratories and placed into t office towers on the two ends of the buildin (Fig. 1). This arrangement allows recircu tion of air in the offices and full air exchang in the center block where the laboratories located. The building is four stories high wi three devoted to laboratories and offices a the fourth for air-handling machinery. To max mize the space within the building, exhau flues for the chemical hoods were placed o side of the building (Fig. 2). These uprig
