A study concerned with urban effects on the hydrological regime of an urbanized basin has been completed at Porto Alegre in the end of the 70’s and in the begining of the 80’s. A new analysis of the data obtained from a network of 14 recording raingauges on the Dilúvio creek basin (80 km2) revealed a probable urban effect on precipitation. The IDF relationships calculated from an urban area, for return periods of 1 to 5 years, presented rainfall rates ranging from 9 to 26% greater than in an rural area, being this effect more pronounced for short duration rates (durations ranging from 30 min to 8 h). A regional analysis supported the hypothesis of existing two distinct IDF relationship areas over the basin: one for the urban and another for the rural areas. Rainfall rate differences are consistent with the expected urban effect, being more pronounced in the urban area and for short durations. Also, the confidence intervals for urban IDF curves are greater than rural ones. These effects should be considerated on storm drainage systems design and operation at Porto Alegre.
