Water is an essential natural resource for all life forms and should be distributed with quality and without waste. The idea of optimizing water distribution systems came from some researchers with simulations of real networks using computational models to study their behavior in different situations. The main steps of this modeling are calibration; operation and control; design and optimization; and route networks. In order to improve one of these techniques, calibration, this work identifies some parameters (friction and roughness factor) of a hydraulic system and analyzes the most convenient technique: identifying the friction factor by the inverse transient method (ITM) with optimization of the selection of the solution by genetic algorithm (GA) or identifying it from roughness (Swamee formula), which is also calibrated by ITM-GA. The study is conducted based on a synthetic mesh taken from the literature, but it represents a real system. The conditions for the analysis are: a valve maneuver responsible for the transient event, the monitoring of transient loads on only one node of the network and the use of two types of solution of the genetic algorithm selection (with elitism and without elitism). The results show that regardless of the type of selection, it is more convenient to identify the friction factor determined from the absolute roughness than calibrate it by the inverse transient method due to the large variability of friction factors during the transient event
