The industrial sector is responsible for approximately 20% of global water consumption and, despite its growing participation in total water demand, the problem of water is still an underexplored subject in the Brazilian industrial sector. The methodologies adopted to estimate water use in the Brazilian industries present an old database, which is no longer current in relation to the technologies now used, and from other countries, and thus there is a clear need for a more up to date, specific study for the country. From this perspective, the objective was the construction of a technical coefficients matrix of water resources for the Brazilian industrial sector. Firstly, an extensive survey of data on the technical coefficients on withdrawal, consumption and return for industrial typologies was performed using the National Classification of Economic Activities (CNAE). A major analysis was then done to evaluate the dispersion of data from the same segment, seeking technical justifications for data behavior. The last stage consisted of matrix validation, supported by discussions with relevant industrial sector entities and water resources management agencies. The data obtained on the research covered 33 typologies of economic activities, representing the main sectors of the Brazilian economic activities. It was concluded that the technical coefficients matrix of water resources produced consistently and accurately represents the demands of water in Brazilian industries.
