This essay discusses Saussure’s comparison between language ( langue ) and the chess game in Cours de Linguistique Generale ; in Riedlinger’s, Patois’ and Constantin’s notebooks; and in Ecrits de Linguistique Generale . By discussing the process of establishing a scientific terminology, the role of the chess game metaphor in Saussure’s theory is questioned. Through that metaphor, Saussure developed the conception of language ( langue ) as a system of rules and pure values. Therefore, it is considered that Saussure’s metaphors are not only reducible to a stylistic or didactic issue. This study is situated in the theoretical framework concerning the History of Linguistic Ideas and French Discourse Analysis.
