Schiff bases are compounds that possess C=N, formed through condensation reactions of aldehyde or ketones with primary amines. The metal complexes of Schiff bases have been reported to possess potential applications in many fields, such as biological activities, polymers, dyes and catalysis.1 The palladium(II) Schiff-base complexes have been widely used as homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for coupling reactions.2,3 Therefore, we synthesized a tetradentate Schiff base that was coordinated with palladium(II). The synthesis of the complex C21H24N2O4Pd was as follows: 1 mmol of 2,2′-(((2,2-dimethylpropane-1,3-diyl)bis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(4-methoxyphenol) was dissolved in 10 mL of acetonitrile, added to a stirred solution of 1 mmol of palladium(II) acetate in 10 mL acetonitrile. The solution was refluxed for 6 h, cooled to room temperature and left in a refrigerator for 1 week. The red crystals obtained were filtered off, washed with cold acetonitrile and air-dried (Fig. 1). Yield, 36.7%; m.p. 473 – 478 K. Anal. Calcd. for C21H24N2O4Pd: C, 53.12; H, 5.09; N, 5.90%; Found: C, 52.75; H, 5.08; N, 6.19%. The IR spectrum was obtained as a KBr disc on Perkin Elmer Spectrum One FTIR Spectrometer from 450 – 4000 cm–1. The peaks at 1602, 1318, 1258, 1541, 571 and 468 cm–1 are assigned to v(C=N), v(C–N), v(C–O), v(C=C aromatic), v(Pd–O) and v(Pd–N), respectively. The infrared data obtained are in concordance with those reported.4,5 The NMR spectrum was obtained as a CDCl3 solution on Bruker Varian 500 MHz spectrometer. The 1H NMR chemicals shifts, δ, observed are (ppm): 1.28 (s, 3H, CH3), 3.46 (s, 2H, CH2), 3.80 (s, 3H, OCH3), 6.84 – 7.18 (m, 3H, aromatic, JHH = 1 – 3 and 6 – 9 Hz), 7.45 (s, 1H, HC=N). The coupling constant indicates the presence of meta and ortho aromatic protons. The effective magnetic moment, as measured on Sherwood Auto Magnetic Susceptibility Balance at room temperature, was 0 B.M., indicating diamagnetic nature of the complex, where there are no unpaired electrons in the d orbitals, agreeing with the square-planar geometry around the central palladium(II) ion. The DMSO solution of the complex showed no molar conductivity, indicating its non-electrolytic nature.6 The crystal and structure-refinement data are summarized in Table 1 and selected bond distances and angles in Table 2. H atoms were positioned geometrically and allowed to ride on the parent C atom, with C–H = 0.95 – 0.98 Å, and with Uiso(H) = 1.2 (1.5 for methyl groups) times Ueq(C). Figure 1 represents the chemical diagram whereas Fig. 2 shows the ORTEP structure of the title compound. The crystal packing is shown in Fig. 3 with hydrogen bonds indicated by dashed lines.
