We have engaged in synthetic studies on coordination polymers of metal carboxylates, because their lantern-like dinuclear cores can be used as building blocks for metal-assembled compounds, some of which have an adsorption property for small gas molecules.1–10 1,2-Bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe) is an interesting N,N¢-bidentate ligand, which can link the dinuclear carboxylates to form one-dimensional chain assemblies, similarly to 4,4¢-bipyridine, but different in the orientation of the nitrogen donor atoms. So far, copper(II) acetate,5,6 rhodium(II) acetate,8 molybdenum(II) acetate,9 and molybdenum(II) benzoate10 were successfully used as metal sources for chain compounds with bpe. In this study, we isolated a new chain compound from a reaction of copper(II) pivalate and bpe, and determined the crystal structure of this compound, which is the first example of a dpe adduct of copper(II) pivalate, as shown in Fig. 1. Copper(II) pivalate was prepared by a method described in the literature.3 A 37 mg (0.2 mmol) portion of bpe was added to a solution of copper(II) pivalate (106 mg, 0.2 mmol) in 6 cm3 of ethanol, and the solution was stirred for overnight. The precipitate was collected, washed by ethanol, and dried under vacuum. Yield, 11.9 mg (8.3%). Anal.
