The synthesis, elucidation of the crystal structures and investigation of the physical properties of new liquid crystals are important for studying the relationship between molecular structures and mesophases.1–3 Numerous studies have been dedicated to structural investigations and determinations of the molecular aggregation mechanisms. X-ray crystallographic analysis plays an important role in obtaining information about intermolecular interactions that control the mesophases. We have also reported on the crystal structures of some liquid crystals, such as 4-cyanophenyl 4-n-alkoxybenzoates,1 N,N¢bis(5-alkoxytropon-2-yl)piperazines,2 2,2¢-dialkoxy-5,5¢bitropone,2 and bis(4-dodecyloxyphenyl)diazene oxide.3 We now report on the structure of 4-carboxybenzylidene-4¢hexylaniline (1) with the aim of contributing to a deeper understanding of the relationships between the mesomorphic property and molecular packing in the crystal structure. Compound (1) was synthesized by the reaction of 4-n-hexylaniline and 4-formylbenzoic acid in the presence of acetic acid. The mesomorphic property and spectral data of 1 are as follows: Cr·177·SmF·186·SmC·254·N·258·Iso, 1H NMR (CDCl3) d 0.89 (3H, t, J = 6.9 Hz), 1.25–1.38 (6H, m), 1.63 (2H, quin, J = 7.5 Hz), 1.86 (2H, t, J = 7.5 Hz), 7.21 (2H, d, J = 8.2 Hz), 7.23 (2H, d, J = 8.2 Hz), 8.01 (2H, d, J = 8.2 Hz), 8.22 (2H, d, J = 8.2 Hz), and 8.56 (1H, s). 13C NMR (CDCl3) d 14.1, 22.6, 29.0, 31.5, 31.7, 35.6, 120.9 (2C), 128.6 (2C), 129.2 (2C), 130.6 (2C), 131.1, 141.0, 141.8, 148.9, 158.0, and 170.8. Single crystals of 1 were grown in a mixture of chloroform–ethyl acetate (1:1 v/v) at room temperature. The data-collection and refinement parameters are listed in Table 1.
