There has been considerable interest in the coordination chemistry of metal carboxylates with a lantern-like structure because of their unique properties derived from the dinuclear structure.1–4 We have engaged in synthetic studies on dinuclear ruthenium(II,III) carboxylates to make such systems.1,5,6 Previously, we reported on the synthesis and crystal structure of a chloridobridged chain complex of dinuclear ruthenium(II,III) 3,4,5tri(ethoxy-d5)benzoates, [Ru2{3,4,5-(C2D5O)3C6H2CO2}4Cl]n·2n C2H5OH (1) to investigate the 1H NMR spectra.6 In this study, we isolated an aqua adduct derived from an ion-exchange reaction of 1, [Ru2{3,4,5-(C2D5O)3C6H2CO2}4(H2O)2]BF4·C4H8O (2) (Fig. 1), and determined the crystal structure of this adduct, which may be important as a useful starting material to produce this kind of deuterated compounds. The synthesis was carried out by using the standard Schlenk technique under argon. The complex 1 (92 mg, 0.082 mmol) and AgBF4 (18 mg, 0.092 mmol) were mixed in 10 ml of tetrahydrofuran for 24 h with shielding from light. The mixture was filtered to remove any precipitate of AgCl. The filtrate was evaporated to 2 ml, and layered with hexane. After 1 day, reddish-brown crystals suitable for X-ray crystallography were obtained.
