Metal carboxylates with a lantern-like dinuclear structure have attracted much attention, because they have unique dinuclear structures and interesting properties, such as the gas-adsorption behavior.1–8 Recently, we reported on the crystal structures of chain compounds of molybdenum(II) benzoate with 4,4¢-bipyridyl (4,4¢-bpy)9 and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane.10 These compounds showed the Type II adsorption property in the IUPAC classification for N2 molecules with the SBET values of 2.71 and 2.47 m2 g–1, respectively.9,10 In this study, we extended these systems to a chain compound of molybdenum(II) benzoate with 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpel) in order to study the crystal structure and the adsorption property. The crystal structure of catena(tetrakis(m-benzoato-O,O¢)(m-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethyleneN,N¢)dimolybdenum(II)), [Mo2(C6H5CO2)4(bpel)]n, was determined by X-ray crystallography, and the adsorption property was studied for N2, which is the first example of a bpel adduct of molybdenum(II) benzoate, as shown in Fig. 1.
