クラウンエーテルなどの大環状配位子は,イオンに対す る高選択的錯化剤として分析化学的に重要である.溶液中 での大環状配位子錯体の安定性は,イオンと配位子との直 接の相互作用からばかりではなく,イオン,配位子及びこ れらの錯体の溶質-溶媒間相互作用からも影響を受ける. したがって,大環状配位子の錯化特性を理解するには,各 溶質の溶媒和に関する情報が必要である. 溶媒和の強さを表す最も基本的な物理量は溶媒和エネル ギーであるが,その測定は一般に容易ではない.一方,あ る溶媒から他の溶媒への溶質の移行ギブズエネルギーは, 比較的容易に求めることができる.また,溶媒間移行ギブ ズエネルギーの代わりに,溶媒間移行活量係数を用いるこ ともできる.溶媒 s1から溶媒 s2への溶質 iの標準移行ギ ブズエネルギーを ∆G tr,s1→s2(i) とすると,対応する溶媒間 移行活量係数 γ (i) は式( 1)により定義される.
