Various 1,2,4-triazole derivatives are found to be associated with diverse pharmacological activity.1 Schiff bases derived from 3substituted-4-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazoles exhibit antiinflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial and CNS depressant activities.2 A number of 3-substituted-4-amino-5-mercapto1,2,4-triazoles serve as important chemotherapeutic agents. They show analgesic, antiasthmatic, diuretic, antihypertensive, anticholinergic, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, antitubercular, antiviral, and carcinostatic properties.3 Schiff bases of 1,2,4-triazole find diverse applications and extensive biological activity. Some Schiff bases derived from 1,2,4-triazole exhibit a plant-growth regulating effect on the growth of wheat radicles and radish radicles.4 The title compound is also a Schiff base, since it is one of the triazole derivatives. X-ray structure and conformational analyses have been undertaken to understand the detailed geometry of the molecule and inter molecular interactions to understand its pharmacological activity. A mixture of triazole (0.01 mol), p-tolualdehyde (0.01 mol) and ethanol (20 ml) was made in an R. B. flask. Two drops of concentrated sulfuric acid were added and refluxed on a water bath for 3 to 4 h. Upon cooling, the solid separated was collected by filtration, dried and recrystallized from ethanol. Corrosponding, triazole was in turn obtained by refluxing a mixture of thiocarbohydraxide (1 g) in glacial acetic acid (10 ml) for about 4 h. A colorless hexagonal-shaped crystal was grown from acetonitrile and ethylalcohol by a vapor-diffusion method. X-ray diffraction intensity data were collected for a single crystal of approximate dimensions (0.4 ¥ 0.35 ¥ 0.3 mm) on a Bruker-Nonius Kappa diffractometer using Mo Ka radiation (l = 0.71073 Å) in the w-scan mode. Subsequently, all of the measured reflections were reduced and corrected for Lorentz and polarization effects. The crystal data and the refinement details are listed in Table 1.
