Isotachophoresis is one of the excellent techniques used for the separation and determination of ionic species. Although only a few micro liters of a sample solution is sufficient for the technique, the concentration of a sample greater than about 0.1 mmol dm-3 is required. For the isotachophoretic determination of traces of ions, enrichment by solvent extraction"2 and coprecipitation3 has been reported. In a previous study4, the authors developed a spectrophotometric method for the determination of phosphate after the collection of molybdophosphate as an ion pair with bis[2-(5-chloro-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenolato]cobalt(III) (Co-5-CI-PADAP) cation on an organic-solvent-soluble membrane filter. Collection on an organic-solvent-soluble membrane filter has been proposed by Taguchi et al.s The procedure for collection on a membrane filter is easy and requires only a few minutes. In the present paper, an isotachophoretic method for phosphate after enrichment by collection on a membrane filter is proposed. The enrichment of phosphate enables a sensitive isotachophoretic determination. Moreover, by the use of isotachophoresis, interferences caused by coexisting ions on spectrophotometry4 are eliminated.
