pair. However, some hybridization occurs and the tetrahedral structure is distorted1) . In many glasses, both arsenic and antimony ions have trivalent and pentavalent states2). In the presence of ferric or ferrous ions, arsenic and antimony ions can participate in the following redox reactions3); As5++2 Fe2+=As3++2Fe3+•c•c(1) or Sb5++2 Fee+=Sb3++2Fe3+•c•c(2) It is said that Ag+ and Cu+ ions are reduced by lower valence ions such as Fe2+, As3+ and Sb3+ ions, when Ag+ and Cu+ ions diffuse into the glasses4). The author analyzed multivalent ions As, Sb and Fe, and calculated the weight ratios of higher valence ions vs lower valence ions in order to study the interactions between Ag+ and Cu+ ions and lower valence ions in the glasses. The greater parts of the diffused Ag+ and Cu+ ions interacted with lower valence ions and silver or copper colloids were formed. As the quantitative analyses of the diffused ions and atoms by chemical methods were difficult, optical absorption and ESR measure ments were made on the glasses containing multi valent ions which Ag+ and Cu+ ions diffused.
