ABSTRAK Tanaman lada ( Piper nigrum L.) merupakan salah satu tanaman perkebunan yang bernilai ekonomi dan penghasil devisa bagi Indonesia. Tanaman lada telah berkembang di hampir seluruh propinsi di Indonesia. Namun hingga saat ini produktivitasnya masih rendah. Salah satu penyebab rendahnya produktivitas diakibatkan tingkat kesuburan tanah yang rendah. Rendahnya tingkat kesuburan tanah menyebabkan tanaman terganggu pertumbuhan dan hasilnya. Untuk meningkatkan kesuburan tanah diperlukan teknologi pemupukan yang tepat sesuai kondisi lahan. Inovasi teknologi pemupukan untuk tanaman lada belum banyak diterapkan di tingkat lapang. Salah satu penyebabnya adalah kebutuhan pupuk yang sangat bersifat spesifik lokasi.  Namun pada prinsipnya, kebutuhan pupuk seyogyanya berbasis pada analisis laboratorium. Tujuannya agar pupuk yang digunakan tepat dan efisien. Penggunaan pupuk yang tidak memperhatikan sifat kimia tanah, bila berlebihan akan menyebabkan pemborosan biaya, pencemaran tanah dan mungkin keracunan pada tanaman. Sebaliknya bila tidak dipupuk, maka produksi tanaman pun akan rendah. Begitu pula pada tanaman lada. Dosis yang ditetapkan untuk tanaman lada, saat ini masih bersifat umum dan digunakan untuk semua kondisi lahan, belum spesifik lokasi. Dengan demikian, maka kebutuhan yang sesungguhnya perlu diterjemahkan kedalam bentuk kebutuhan unsur hara yang spesifik lokasi. Untuk itu dibutuhkan metode yang tepat dan efektif. Dukungan pemerintah sangat diperlukan, terutama kebijakan dalam penyediaan pupuk di tingkat lapang di berbagai wilayah pengembangan lada.  ABSTRACT  Pepper plants ( Piper nigrum L.) is one of estate plants that have economy value and foreign exchange for Indonesia. This plant has developed in almost provincially in Indonesia, but the producitivity of this plant still low. One of the cause of low productivity is low in soil fertility. The low of soil fertility to be effect on growth and result of plant. To increase a soil fertility, needed a technology of fertilizing on soil that base on spesific location.  Innovation of technology of fertilizing of pepper plant was not yet use at the level of farmer. One of the reasons is the need for fertilizer that is very specific location. However, in principle, the need for fertilizer should be based on laboratory analysis. The goal is to use the right and efficient fertilizer. The use of fertilizers that do not pay attention to soil chemical properties, if excessive will lead to waste of costs, soil contamination and possibly poisoning in plants. Conversely, if not fertilized, then the production of plants will be low. Similarly in pepper plants. The dosage prescribed for pepper plants, is currently still general and is used for all land conditions, not location specific. Thus, the actual needs need to be translated into a specific site-specific nutrient requirement. For that needed appropriate and effective method. A support from goverment very needed. especially the policy of provision of fertilizer at field, in all area development of pepper.
