Concrete degradation issues due to riprap entrainment have been observed in the stilling basin at Foster Joseph Sayers Dam. This entrapment occurs during normal flows. The original stilling basin has experienced excessive degradation, and repairs to restore it to original specifications are needed. A physical model study has been performed to determine the flow characteristics of the stilling basin and to develop a design modification to minimize riprap entrapment. The riprap originates in an area that could be replaced with a concrete pad to prevent further riprap entrainment in the stilling basin.
