Stephen PetrinaIn the fall of 1987, the Journal of Technology and Society (JTS) waslaunched as a semi-annual, “scholarly, refereed journal for professionals intechnology education” (Blankenbaker, 1987, n.p.). This came on the heels of thechange of name from the American Industrial Arts Association to theInternational Technology Education Association (ITEA). The new journal wasintended to give scholarly direction to a profession in transition, and provide anoutlet for addressing the increasing publishing demands on teacher educationfaculty. Kendall Starkweather, Executive Director of ITEA was Editor-in-Chief,and E. Keith Blankenbaker of The Ohio State University (OSU) served asManaging Editor. As the first journal of its kind in the U.S., committed entirelyto technology education, the JTS survived in its original form only twoyears—three issues. Near the end of its first year of publication, the fate of theJTS would be shifted from OSU to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and StateUniversity (VPI).Beginning October 1988, Mark Sanders became the Editor and JamesLaPorte the Associate Editor of what would become the Journal of TechnologyEducation (JTE ) in the spring of 1989. Like the short-lived JTS , the JTE wouldbe co-sponsored by the ITEA and the Council on Technology TeacherEducation (CTTE) (Sanders, 1995, pp. 597-598). And like the JTS , the JTE wasinvested with scholarly intentions beginning with its first issue. The JTE hasmatured in this form since that inaugural issue of 1989. The completion of theeighth volume of the JTE in the spring of 1997 ushered in the first change in thejournal’s leadership since its inauguration. James LaPorte was appointed thenew editor, marking a time for anticipation and reflection. Sanders completedhis duties as editor in fall 1997, ending with the first issue of volume 9.The stability of the JTE alone over the past nine years might be enough tosuggest its success. The journal has increased its constituency from an initialcore of 57 subscribers to over 450 from across 13 countries. In the spring of1991, the journal was made available for electronic access and has continued tobe on the frontier of electronic journal publishing through the internet.
