Cirrhosis represents an irreversible stage of hepatic fibrosis that results in a number of complications and a markedly reduced life expectancy. Between 1999 and 2016, there has been a 65% increase in death from cirrhosis in the United States (1). Additionally, cirrhosis is associated with a large economic burden to society through both direct medical costs (drug and hospitalization costs) and indirect medical costs (reduction in health-related quality of life and work productivity). While medical advances have been made in the treatment of certain etiologies of cirrhosis such as chronic viral hepatitis, there has continued to be a rise in the incidence of alcoholic liver disease (ALD).
