Automationvia the internet has recently received con-siderable attention. The prime objective of internet-basedprocessautomationunderlies, amongmanyoth-ers, the feasibility of remote monitoring and controlof a wide range of distributed and collaborative ex-perimental and manufacturing tools and machiner-ies. Such emphasis would adopt the recent soft-ware and hardware development technologies. Thispaper investigates the minimal hardware and soft-ware requirements to design and implement a fullyfunctional academic and industrial automation sys-tem that can be readily attached to the available in-ternet/intranetinfrastructure. Threetiers mainlycon-stitute the proposed system, the instrumentation andmeasurement tier, the software platform (for data col-lection, processing, displaying, and communication),and the client-server tier. The common controller-based techniques, such as PLC (Programmable LogicControllers), SCADA (Supervisory Control and DataAcquisition), and DAQ (Data Acquisition) platformscan be very well employed in such applications with-out sophistication burdens. Eventually, the ultimateintentions of having engineers and technicaloperatorsto monitor, control, maintain, and calibrate factoryequipment, or students involved in lab experimenta-tion, from local or remote distances can be success-fully achieved around the clock.
