Recently, forest education, which the Forest and Forestry Basjc Act describes "prornoting the use of forests for education", has been attracting attention. For its puit, the Forestry Agency started to promote "Forest Environrnental Education" and "E.ducation for Wood Products Use", There are a wide variety of activ{tics, but the actual types of activities in forests har,e not been understeod. So sites in forests fer forest educatjon have not yet been considered. In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the forests for forest education, outdoor and nature activities in ferests were examined ns actual activitjes of forest education, In this study, we analyzed the content of activities in forests and the places for activities through a questiennaire survey on eutdoor nature activities in forests in Hachioji, Tokyo, Japan, and analyzed the relationship between rhe content of forest activities and places for activities. Due to the diversity of forest ype and land use in this city, there should be many different type of forest activitjes. We sent various groups a questionnaire which were cons{dered to be involved with forests activit{es, and then analyzed the contents of actiL,{tios in forests, t'orest types and places for the foi. est activ{ties through cross-tabulation, The survey started by asking whether any activities had l)een irnplemented, and if so, asking' the details of the three main activities. We sent the questionna{re to as7 groups, of which 215 (46.0?fi of the total) re$ponded in 2CD6. A total of lte groups listed nctivities in forests (60,OV6 of the respondents). And 2M actual activities were recorded. We analyzed X)9 activities implernented in Hachioji by 103 groups, without incornplete example data. The results of our investigation n the actual crmditions revealed a wide variety ef 1.3 kinds of forest activities. Every activity was canfied out in all forests types, but 2oztin'-bayashi was used most frequently. Regarding site type, public plaees sucli as parks were used most frequently. Te consider the relationship between centents of activities and forests, forcst activities were characterized mainly by the use of lorest sites, based on the ownership and the need to obtain permission for use. Forest activities tended to use forest sites related forest use forrn: Use-type (a) with no change to the forest such as walkingfhiking was implemented mainly in "open areas"that allewed public access. Use-type (b) with a direet impact on forests was implemented mainly in `'dosed areas"with restncted use. Use-type (c) was mainly implemented in specially designated facilities. Anvther activity was held in various places "ith little impact on forests. Use-type (a) was mf)st common. In conclusion, we considered that tbe content of forest activit{es is closely reiated to the use of the forest; especially the impact on forests frotn forest activities is a major factor. If forestry works wei'e more widespread, it would be necessary to keep forest places where direct impacts on forests in open areas were allowed.
