Incorporation of crop residues, composts or manures as soil amendment has been advocated for managing soil-borne plant pathogens (Hoitink and Fahy, 1986; Lazrovits et al., 2000). In arid regions of India, direct incorporation of residues in soil has not been found successful due to low availability of soil moisture required for decomposition. Half digested crop residues in turn aggravate termite infestation in rainfed crops. More so, crop residues themselves are often infected with soil-borne plant pathogens; their release in soil during slow decomposition may augment inoculum density of pathogens (Lodha et al., 1990).
