The agro-climatic condition of the Meghalaya is favourable for cultivation of wide range of horticultural crops including Capsicum species. In recent years, the Capsicum species found in Northeastern region of India is gaining importance in the scientific community because of their huge diversity and unique characteristics such as extreme pungency in King chilli (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) which has been reported to be one of the hottest chilli in the world. The market for King chilli is a segment with great potential for growth both for fresh consumption and for processing. The area of King chilli in North eastern region is increasing substantially. However, the production and productivity is still not up to the mark considering the potential of the crop in both domestic and international market. Hence, there is a need for development of area specific new varieties and hybrids with high productivity.
