Since 1982, studies conducted in the Bananal river basin, middle Paraiba do Sul river valley, have been providing subsidies for functional and historical modeling of the growth of channel network in headwater valleys. Over the past three decades, measurements of a typical erosive channel (gully) were conducted, pointing on the one hand, to the stability of the main trunk channel and on the other hand, to the acceleration of one of the tip channels as it approximates to the divide. These fi ndings were contrary to the expected, with the reduction in the contribution area upstream of the head of this channel. This fact lead to the hypothesis that a migration of groundwater fl ows from the neighboring valley heads could occur, what was translated as “groundwater piracy”. This study sought to test this possibility, seeking to better understand the relationship between channel network expansion and the behavior of the local groundwater fl ows. Groundwater fl ows numerical modeling was used, setting the depth of the bedrock at 25 m in approximation to fi eld data. Several scenarios were simulated based on the region s geomorphological evolution knowledge. Modeling results showed that the channel network growth strongly controls the direction of groundwater fl ows and the distribution of fl ows between the neighboring headwater valleys analyzed. Furthermore, the results confi rm the “groundwater piracy” between adjacent headwater valleys, pointing to a mobile character of the aquifer in response to the channel network development. It is noteworthy, however, that, given the current conditions of base level associated with the main channel (Piracema River, the major tributary of the Bananal River) and under the current regional rainfall regime, the studied erosive channel and their digit channels have reached stability since 2001.
