Resumen . El amor romantico y los mitos relacionados con el estan fuertemente generizados, y dan lugar a creencias y actitudes erroneas sobre la pareja y su continuidad que, ademas de condicionar las relaciones afectivas, han sido relacionadas con la genesis y el mantenimiento de la violencia contra las mujeres en la pareja. Entre estas creencias estan las relativas al papel del sacrificio y la renuncia (descritas en la tipologia de Lee como estilo de amor Agape), que se consideran como parte indisoluble del concepto de amor romantico, y del mandato de genero tradicional femenino, y que pueden ser auto-limitantes, y constituir una violencia encubierta. Con objeto de indagar en esta cuestion y en las diferencias entre mujeres y hombres al afrontar estas renuncias, se realizo un estudio cualitativo proponiendo a una muestra de 260 estudiantes universitarios/as que valoraran hasta que punto estarian dispuestos/as a realizar cambios en distintos aspectos importantes de sus vidas (el lugar de residencia, el empleo, las amistades, y el proyecto vital) por amor. Los resultados indican que este alumnado manifiesta estar dispuesto a realizar determinados sacrificios en nombre del amor (especialmente en lo relativo al cambio de domicilio), pero no otros (como las amistades), si bien las motivaciones expresadas por los chicos y las chicas son diferentes. Romantic love and the myths related to it are strongly gendered, and give rise to erroneous beliefs and attitudes about the couple and their continuity that, in addition to conditioning affective relationships, have been related to the genesis and maintenance of intimate partner violence against women. Among these beliefs are those relating to the role of sacrifice and renunciation (described in Lee’s typology as Agape love style), which are considered to be an indissoluble part of the concept of romantic love, and of the traditional female gender mandate, and which may be self-limiting and constitute covert violence. In order to investigate this issue and the differences between women and men in dealing with these renunciations, a qualitative study was carried out proposing to a sample of 260 university students to assess the extent to which they would be willing to make changes in different important aspects of their lives (place of residence, employment, friendships, and life project) out of love. The results indicate that students are willing to make certain sacrifices in the name of love (especially regarding the change of residence), but not others (such as friendships), although the motivations expressed by boys and girls are different.
