The Relación Geográ f ica text and map of Tuzantla, together with the map of Valladolid (Yucatán) , are the only Mexican items of this nature deposited in the Archivo General de Indias, Sevilla, that have not yet been published (Cline, 1964: 356). Through the courtesy of the Director of AGI, and the help of Dr. Adele Kibre, a photographic copy of Tuzantla items was obtained, with permission to publish them. The Relación of Tuzantla forms part of a longer document, the Relación of the Minas de Temazcaltepec. Temazcaltepec was included in a group of 121 Relaciones for which the Cronista-Cosmógrafo Juan López de Velasco signed a receipt on November 21, 1583  (AGI, MS) . Little is known of its subsequent archival history, except that the document was transferred to the Archives of the Indies after it was established in the late eighteenth century. Unlike the great majority of similar Relación Geográ f ica items, which are now found in Section 5, Papeles de Simancas, Indiferente General, Legajos 1529 and 1530, the Temazcaltepec Relación was placed in Patronato Real 238 (2-4-1/16), No. 2, ramo 1. In fact the document is at present in the Map Section of AGI, rather than in Patronato files.
