A Design Procedure for Filters based on the Coupling Matrix Approach This thesis deals with a filter design procedure which is based on a description of the filter through coupled resonators. The entire representation of the filter encompasses the external quality factors of the resonators which are responsible for coupling the filter to the external source and load impedance, the coupling coefficients describing the amount of coupling among the resonators, and the resonance frequencies of the resonators. A direct relationship between these describing elements and the physical topology of the filter is a great benefit of the coupling matrix approach. Every iteration step of the procedure begins with the extraction of a coupling matrix deduced from scattering parameters. By comparing this coupling matrix to a theroretical one, the so called prototype of the filter, one can easily find out which elements of the filter need to be tuned. Approaching the extracted coupling matrix to the theoretical one in turn leads to better agreement of the respective scattering parameters thereby optimizing the filter performance in a purposive manner. Whether the scattering parameters stem from a simulation or a measurement is of no concern for the proposed method, making it suitable not only for the design (synthesis) of filters, but also for tuning them. However, if there are losses present within a filter response, a compensation is necessary to obtain a high degree of accuracy. For that purpose, different methods from the literature have been assessed in the thesis, and a novel method which is based on a combination of Feldtkeller’s equation and the predistortion technique is presented and verified by multiple examples. In the literature the coupling matrix approach is known to be a valuable tool for the design of bandpass filters.
