The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of different taper functions to describe the di/dbh relationship and stem volumes. We used data from a Tectona grandis L. f. stand located in the Pará State, with ages varying between four and five years-old. Five taper function were evaluated: Schöpfer, Kozak, Demaerschalk, Ormerod, and Hradetzky. The selection criteria for choosing the best fitted equation was based on the Schlaegel Index (IA), standard error of estimate in percentage (Syx%), and residual graphical analysis, as well as the complementary statistics: deviation (D), average of the absolute differences (MD), and standard deviation of the differences (DPD). Based on these statistics, a ranking permitted choose the best AGRARIAN ACADEMY, Centro Científico Conhecer Goiânia, v.4, n.7; p. 2017 326 model. The Hradetzky model was the most suitable to estimate the di/dbh relationship. Demarschalk model was indicated to estimate the stem volume. Hradetzky model showed also a good performance. The Kozak model presented the worst fits to estimate both variables.
