Responsible for much of the transportation of iron ore from Brazil to the railway is of great importance in the growth of the country. Trains have concentrated on its tractionlocomotives diesel / electric where any type of failure can lead to delay in delivery of keyraw materials in the country. The injury caused by failures in locomotives drove theengineering maintenance of MRS Logistica S / A, to work on reducing these gaps. In onestudy it was found that the DC Traction Motor has high rate of failures in locomotives. The main failure mode is the electrical isolation for mass armor and housing. In this paper we present a test for improvement in the qualification for the isolation mass in DC Traction Motor used in locomotive diesel / electric. The new standard for the qualification ofelectrical insulation will have as its object of study for the test phase angle or power factor. In this parameter, the condition of the insulation can be estimated by treating it as the dielectric in a capacitor. The change in capacitance or power factor is a measure of thecondition of the traction motor insulation. The result of this study was taken in more than800 tests done on carcasses and armor in a variety of isolation conditions and applying the statistical concept of average for the definition of the ideal
