Introductio n:  The acclimatization stage is limiting to the industrial propagation of coffee ( Coffea arabica  L.) by somatic embryogenesis.  Objective:  To compare the growth in the nursery of coffee vitroplants obtained by somatic embryogenesis with that of plants from seeds.  Methodology :  Vitroplants were acclimatized and seeds germinated in different substrates; plants were transferred to the nursery, where the length and width of leaves and the plants height were measured for 9 months. Results :  Growth in leaf area, length, width and growth rate were similar between vitroplants and plants from seeds; during most of the measurement period, height, length, width and leaf area were barely higher in seed plants than vitroplants, reaching the same values at the end of nursery stage (non-significant difference of 0 cm in length, 0 cm in width and 0.1 cm 2  in leaf area) except that, at the end of the evaluation, seed plants were 1 cm (significantly p<0.05) higher than vitroplants.  Conclusion :  Vitroplant growth is equivalent to that of seed plants in leaf variables, and the higher height in plants from seeds at the end  of the measurements is of little relevance because it was small, and both types of plants presented a vigorous mor- phology. Additionally, this work provides linear equations that relate the length and width of the leaves with leaf area, allowing to estimate the latter parameter by a non-destruc- tive method.
