System efficiency is key to development of standalone lighting systems. Given the temporal separation between energy generation and consumption in standalone outdoor lighting systems, a switching converter is needed for the energy management of the different functions of the system. This paper proposes a singlestage solution based on GaN transistors. Matching certain requirements regarding voltage levels, this topology allows the parallel connection between PV source and LED load, eliminating the need for switching relays typically used in other solutions and reducing system cost and complexity. A 100 W prototype was built and tested. In battery charger mode, the system operates at 250 kHz and presented efficiency higher than 92% within the entire power range with 97.3% peak efficiency. In driver mode, the chosen switching frequency was 345 kHz and 95.8% peak efficiency was achieved.
