Este artigo tem o objetivo de observar as transfiguracoes da personagem Medeia na literatura brasileira, pautando-se, em especial, no tema da feiticaria. Este estudo centra-se na peca teatral Alem do rio (Medea) , de Agostinho Olavo, escrita em 1957, mas publicada apenas em 1961, no livro Dramas para negros e prologo para brancos - antologia do teatro brasileiro. Nessa peca, Olavo ambienta o mito grego no Brasil colonial, caracterizando Medeia com uma rainha africana.
