The objective of the research was to determine the implications of the change from face-to-face to online education in university students, due to the global health crisis caused by COVID-19. The study design was observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional. It involved 400 students from different undergraduate careers of the two largest public higher education institutions in the city of Riobamba: Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo (ESPOCH) and Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo (UNACH). Data were collected through an online questionnaire sent to students via email and social networks. Four dimensions were investigated that measure implications at the psycho-emotional, academic, access and management of Tics, as well as general perceptions. The most relevant results indicate that a large percentage of students have experienced changes at the emotional, educational, and social levels, and have also seen their academic performance decrease with online classes. Regarding Internet access, they report that they often have a good Internet connection, and more than half consider the system adopted by their institution to be satisfactory. The current health crisis has left and is leaving many lessons and challenges still to be met, it is not known exactly how long higher education institutions, which were characterized by their basically face-to-face system, will have to face this challenge of online education, but work must continue to strengthen pedagogical skills and digital competencies of all actors in the higher education system. Keywords: university students, online teaching, COVID-19. Resumen La investigación tuvo como objetivo determinar las implicaciones del cambio de modalidad de la educación presencial a online en estudiantes universitarios debido a la crisis sanitaria mundial por COVID-19. El diseño del estudio fue observacional, descriptivo y de corte transversal. Participaron 400 estudiantes de diferentes carreras de pregrado de las dos instituciones de educación superior públicas más grandes de la ciudad de Riobamba: Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo (ESPOCH) y Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo (UNACH). Los datos fueron recopilados a través de un cuestionario online enviado a los estudiantes a través de correo electrónico y redes sociales. Se investigaron 4 dimensiones que miden implicaciones a nivel psico-emocional, académico, acceso y manejo de Tics, así como percepciones generales. Los resultados más relevantes señalan que un gran porcentaje de estudiantes ha experimentado cambios en el nivel emocional, educativo y social, además, ha visto su rendimiento académico disminuido con las clases online. Con relación al acceso a internet, refieren que con frecuencia disponen de una buena conexión a internet y más de la mitad considera que el sistema adoptado por su institución es satisfactorio. La crisis sanitaria actual ha dejado y está dejando muchas lecciones y desafíos todavía por cumplir, no se conoce con exactitud el tiempo que aún las instituciones de educación superior, que se caracterizaban por su sistema básicamente presencial, tengan que enfrentar este reto de la educación online, pero se debe continuar trabajando en reforzar capacidades pedagógicas y competencias digitales de todos los actores del sistema de educación superior. Palabras Clave: estudiantes universitarios, enseñanza online, COVID-19.
