The article reports on a study of the role of the speaking voice components in creating a humorous effect in modern British academic public speaking. In the investigation the author defines the complex phenomenon – speaking voice and its components, examines cultural and national-linguistic peculiarities of British humour and irony, reveals their functional aspect and describes melodic realization of the speaking voice components in humorous and ironic commentaries in academic presentations of British lecturers. A complex method of the investigation is used, i.e. auditory, rhetorical and communicative-pragmatic types of analysis are included.
