Labour, forms of labour organization and resistance of the labourers in the ports of the Colombian Caribbean, 1850-1930 In this article we study the cargo workers or labourers in the Caribbean ports of Colombia, with an emphasis on the gang as a way of organizing work for the transport of the load. As a unit of work, the gang was the result of the labour tradition of the region, the pressure from the authorities and employers, and the workers’ own efforts to regulate the supply, recruitment and organization of work. When freight transport grew and stabilized, the relations between workers and firms were mediated by the contractor, who came from the core of the gangs. By the end of the first decade of the twentieth century, the workers demanded the abolition of the contractor for a direct relationship with the companies. This relationship was reached by the end of the 1920s, but it was now mediated by mutual organizations and unions converted into labour providers using the system for gangs.  Resumen: En este articulo estudio los trabajadores cargueros o braceros de los puertos del Caribe colombiano, con enfasis en la cuadrilla como forma de organizacion laboral para la movilizacion de la carga. Como unidad de trabajo, la cuadrilla fue el resultado de la tradicion laboral de la region, de las presiones de las autoridades y de los empresarios, y de las iniciativas de los trabajadores por regular la oferta, la contratacion y la organizacion del trabajo. Cuando el movimiento de carga crecio y se estabilizo, las relaciones entre los trabajadores y las empresas fueron mediadas por el contratista, salido del seno de las cuadrillas. Para finales del primer decenio del siglo XX, los trabajadores exigieron la abolicion del contratista y una relacion directa con las empresas. Esta relacion se logro finalizando el decenio de 1920 pero ahora mediada por las organizaciones mutuarias y sindicales convertidas en las proveedoras de mano de obra mediante el sistema de cuadrillas.
