In this article, we start from the hypothesis that the construction of Brasília functioned as a discursive event (PÊCHEUX, 1990) in the category of demonyms and we have two objectives: (i) to reflect discursively about gentilic, i.e., to think such category not only as metalanguage of the order of evidence but as metalanguage in its effects in relation to the subject; (ii) to develop the historicity of the Brazilian demonym. This essay is based on the History of Linguistic Ideas in its encounter with Discourse Analysis (PÊCHEUX; ORLANDI).
