Iron is the most ubiquitously abundant redox active transition metal on earth, which has an important indication on lake sediments.Root radial oxygen loss (ROL) of aquatic plant allows root to create a rhizosphere oxidized zone and the rhizosphere is a biologically active zone in which oxidation and reduction occurred simultaneously. In the present study, microelectrodes and real time qPCR were used to investigate the effects of ROL of Hydrilla verticillata on typical iron⁃oxidizing bacteria (Gallionella) and i⁃ ron⁃reducing bacteria (Geobacter) in sediment. The results showed that H. verticillata grew quickly, and changed valence state and fraction of iron. ROL was an important parameter, which affected the bacterial communities of rhizosphere. The abundances of Gal⁃ lionella and Geobacter were higher in the rhizosphere, suggesting that the rhizosphere promoted microbial Fe cycling. These results provide insight into the contribution of microorganism in Fe cycling.
