Gustaw Herling-Grudziński’s A Journey to Burma is his early, and today a little forgotten, text that clearly remains on the sidelines of critical attempts made by successive researchers studying the writer’s work. 1 Herling stayed in Burma just under a month, at the end of May and beginning of June 1952. 2 At the invitation extended by the Congress for Cultural Freedom, as the author of A World Apart he gave a series of lectures exposing the illusions of communism.
