The article analyses two texts, one by Pyotr Chaadayev and the other by Pyotr Vyazemsky, which discuss Nikolai Gogol's Selected Passages from Correspondence with his Friends. Chaadayev and Vyazemsky took a stance towards a new turn in Gogol's worldview expressed in his book, at the same time, but their thoughts about the book, as well as their opinions about the reasons why Gogol had changed his worldview, were different. This difference is representative of the opinions existing in the intellectual milieu of that time. Chaadayev shared a popular opinion that Gogol had deviated from the spirit of the Christian doctrine while Vyazemsky was amongst a few who interpreted Gogol's book through the secular and humanist lenses. At the same time, Chaadayev and Vyazemsky agreed on the high importance of Gogol's attempt to return to a positive ideal and to propose an ethical model based on religion. For them, this change was particularly important in the context of the radical change of the Russian literature which was becoming more politicallyengaged and naturalist.
