The article deals with the features of the personality of Socrates, their inseparable connection with his philosophy from the perspective of problems of cognition and knowledge, introduces reflection on the topic of distinguishing the concepts of “ignorance” and “lack of knowledge”, shown in the example of the history of Count Pato, which are considered in the context of Socrates philosophy. The author also proposes the concept of “wise ignorance” as an intermediate step on the way from ignorance to knowledge; also Socrates' dialectic method and its stages are revealed: irony, maieutics, induction. The connection of the theory of knowledge of Socrates and his ethical views, as well as the importance of his philosophy for the development of science, are shown.
