RESUMEN Durante el ultimo cuarto del siglo XVIII, y especialmente desde el comienzo del reinado de Carlos IV, toda la Peninsula experimento una oleada bandolera de proporciones llamativas e intensidad creciente. Las indagaciones de su presencia e impacto en ambas mesetas no dejan lugar a dudas respecto a tal incidencia, que podemos aquilatar a partir de sus cifras (volumen de asaltos y su comparacion con otras regiones, aproximacion al numero e identificacion de los bandoleros, o evolucion del numero de los ajusticiados), pero tambien de otros aspectos de tipo cualitativo y organizativo. De otra parte, el analisis de la estructura socioeconomica revela que tal efervescencia no fue casual, y que no se pueden desligar ambos extremos en la explicacion del fenomeno. El desafio que supuso en materia de orden publico dio alas a la militarizacion desde la decada de 1780, aunque sus resultados no respondieron a las expectativas iniciales. PALABRAS CLAVE : Carlos IV, seguridad y orden publico, bandolerismo, Castilla, militarizacion ABSTRACT During the last quarter of the 18th century, and especially from the beginning of the reign of Carlos IV, the whole Peninsula experienced a wave of banditry of notable proportions and increasing intensity. The investigations into its presence and impact on both mesetas leaves no doubt about this and is shown by the volume of assaults and its comparison with other regions, estimation of the number and identity of the bandits and the number of those summarily executed as well as other evidence, both qualitative and organizational. Furthermore, the analysis of the socioeconomic structure reveals that such an upsurge did not occur by chance and that neither extreme can be separated from an understanding of the phenomenon. The challenge to public order it represented led to the militarization of the 1780s, which did not produce the expected results.
