Given the current context of lack of economic opportunities for women, this paper examines women’s empowerment in relation to their work in the tourism sector. The research studies the case of family-owned Bed and Breakfast establishments in the town of Tonatico, State of Mexico, and describes women’s level of empowerment as a result of their participation in this sub-sector of the lodging industry. The study employs a qualitative method with a gender perspective analysis. Data was obtained from twenty establishments where forty three women participate. The measurement of empowerment considers a total of seven factors following Hernandez and Garcia (2008), and Davis and Newstron (2004). Empowerment levels were ranked according to the obtained score into: high, medium and low. Finally, the study concludes that there is a level of empowerment for women regardless of their occupational profile or educational level. This work is a first approach to the topic studied in the country
