Chez le premier Maeterlinck, la « fonction poetique », au sens de Jakobson, est dominante et transversale aux genres. Le sens s’organise a partir de structures phoniques redondantes qui donnent au texte une grande homogeneite. Sans doute Maeterlinck, comme Valery le dit de Mallarme « a reve d’une poesie qui fut comme deduite de l’ensemble des proprietes et des caracteres du langage ». Le reve des Symbolistes n’etait-il pas, selon le meme Valery, de reprendre a la Musique son bien?AbstractMaeterlinck’s early work is dominated by what Roman Jakobson termed the “poetic function” of language. In both his poems and plays, meaning stems from redundant phonic structures that render them very homogeneous. Maeterlinck probably dreamt of a type of poetry that was deducted, as it were, from the properties and characteristics of language (to paraphrase Paul Valery’s commentary on Stephane Mallarme). Wasn’t it the Symbolists’ dream, still according to Valery, to get a hold of Music’s prized possessions?
