Conducting apicultural activity in the European Union is currently seriously threatened due to the diverse factors of both socio-economic and environmental nature. The new regulation establishing the common organisation of agricultural markets has provided the opportunity to support the beekeepers primarily through the performance of national apiculture programmes financed by 50% of the EU budget. The aim of this article is to try to assess to what extent the legal instruments provided in this Regulation, firstly, support beekeepers in the European Union and, secondly, provide as an effective way of counteracting to the challenges facing the apiculture sector in the 21 st century.
