Cartamo (Carthamus tinctorius L.) caracteriza-se por ser uma especie em que suas sementes oferecem ampla variabilidade de uso, desde a extracao de oleo para industria farmaceutica e de biodiesel e as hastes florais para ornamentacao. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial fisiologico das sementes de cartamo armazenadas por diferentes periodos pelo teste de emergencia de plântulas em diferentes composicoes de substratos. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 7x4 (composicoes de substratos: areia e solo, nas proporcoes volumetricas de 0:1, 1:0, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 2:1 e 3:1, respectivamente e periodos de armazenamento de 0, 4, 8 e 12 meses, em câmara fria a 15o C e 40% UR), com oito repeticoes. Avaliou-se o potencial fisiologico das sementes em condicoes de laboratorio conforme a legislacao brasileira e em casa de vegetacao, pelo teste de emergencia, com a semeadura em bandeja plastica, com avaliacoes diarias. Observou-se em condicoes laboratoriais que o armazenamento afetou negativamente o potencial fisiologico das sementes de cartamo, tendo sua deterioracao acentuada a partir do oitavo mes de armazenamento. Este resultado foi confirmando pelos testes de emergencia em diferentes composicoes de substratos, assim, demonstrando viabilidade da execucao destes testes em substratos. Deste modo, recomenda-se a composicao volumetrica de 1:1, a qual possibilitou a melhor expressao do potencial fisiologico dessas sementes.   Palavras-chave: Carthamus tinctorius L. Germinacao. Qualidade fisiologica.   Abstract Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is characterized by being a species in which its seeds offer wide variability in use, from oil extraction to  the pharmaceutical and biodiesel industry and floral stems for ornamentation. The objective of this work was to evaluate the physiological potential of safflower seeds stored for different periods by the seedling emergence test in different substrate compositions. The experimental design used was completely randomized, in a 7x4 factorial scheme (compositions of substrates: sand and soil, in volumetric proportions of 0:1, 1:0, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 2:1 and 3:1, respectively, and storage periods of 0, 4, 8 and 12 months, in a cold chamber at 15o C and 40% RH), with eight repetitions. The physiological potential of the seeds under laboratory conditions  was evaluated according to Brazilian legislation and under greenhouse conditions, by emergency test, with sowing in a plastic tray, with daily evaluations. It was observed under laboratory conditions that storage negatively affected the physiological potential of safflower seeds, with their deterioration accentuated after the eighth month of storage. This result was confirmed by the emergency tests on different substrate compositions, thus demonstrating the feasibility of carrying out these tests on substrates. Thus, a volumetric composition of 1:1 is recommended, which enabled the best expression of the physiological potential of these seeds.   Keywords: Carthamus tinctorius L. Germination.
